599.- Aplicaciones pacificas

Hay aplicaciones mas pacíficas del teorema de Tales, pero que resultan peligrosas. ¿Se acuerdan de éste post? "Se tardaron 22 siglos en calcular la distancia entre la Tierra y el Sol..."

Los 22 siglos no son arbitrarios, aunque están equivocados. En esa época, Diógenes Laercio escribió que Tales había medido las pirámides midiendo la sombra en el momento en que la propia sombra de Tales igualaba su altura. Plinio dice lo mismo, pero la versión de Plutarco es diferente:

... without trouble or the assistance of any instrument [he] merely set up a stick at the extremity of the shadow cast by the pyramid and, having thus made two triangles by the impact of the sun's rays, ... showed that the pyramid has to the stick the same ratio which the shadow [of the pyramid] has to the shadow [of the stick]

Pero tratar de medir la distancia de la Tierra al Sol es peligroso... dicen que Tales murió cuando cayó a un pozo por observar los astros.
